Some people are incredibly hard to shop for, gift-wise. Birthdays can still be tackled but with the holidays around the corner, the list grows quickly to include everyone you might need to get something for- friends, coworkers, friendly neighbor, irate relative. Edible gifts are your answer because let’s face it, the best kind of gifts are the kind that can be eaten. With a little crafty ingenuity, you can create impressive gourmet gifts that are both thoughtful and delicious. Another big bonus: they are pretty damn cheap!
Herbed infused oils are one of my favorite edible gifts to give. It’s wonderful to have on hand to dress up a soup, salad or a main in an instant. It’s an easy way to punch up the flavors and add zing to your meals. I am a big fan of basil and therefore combined it with olive oil to create a gorgeous gourmet gift that is so good that it’ll be hard for you to give it away. This little number is easy to make, cheap and sure to impress!
You can use any fresh herb you like: rosemary, thyme, tarragon, oregano, the list is endless. Pick an excellent quality extra virgin olive oil and throw it in the blender with some garlic, salt and blanched basil leaves. Give it a whir and there you have it: a stunning gift that not only looks great but tastes of summer in a bottle. You can strain the oil but I really like the green flecks of basil and therefore skipped that step. Use a bottle with a cork to avoid any leakage, tie it up with a pretty twine and include a thoughtful handwritten note. You can also pair it up with a crusty loaf of bread, cheese and tomatoes in a box for the lucky recipient.
2 cups fresh basil
